Selective Carburizing may be accomplished by masking. Unless specified otherwise, threaded ends of shafts shall be masked prior to carburizing. In through hardened parts, furnace atmosphere which increase the carbon content of surfaces above the maximum for the respective compositionĀ and increase the surface hardness above the core hardness is not acceptable. In addition, the microstructure shall not show any evidence of carburization or nitriding.
